The paper studies Mykhailo Serhiyovych Hrushevsky's vision of the role and place of Ukraine of the Middle Course of the Dnieper River in the creation of the Ukrainian ethnos, state formation and crucial events in the life of the Ukrainian people. The article focuses on the history of the Middle Dnieper Ukraine, which confirms the main positions of Mykhailo Hrushevsky concerning the continuity of the historical processes of the Ukrainian people and refuting a view about the extermination or expulsion of the Middle Dnieper population during the Mongol-Tatar invasion and the repopulation of the region in the 15th century (the view that has been used to advocate an inferior status of the Ukrainian ethnos). The study also echoes Hrushevsky's argument about preservation and multiplication of the traditions of the social organisation in the region – from the times of the Kyiv Rus’ to the modern times of the Cossacs.
